Event Description

Anxiety in children is reaching epidemic proportions and takes many forms including obsessions, compulsions, phobias, and panic. Anxiety begs for an explanation in order to arrive at a solution that addresses the roots, not just manages the symptoms. This workshop has four parts. The first three explain unfolding a model of anxiety including the neuroscience of anxiety, attachment and vulnerability, and a working model of anxiety.  The brain has as a complex and comprehensive human alarm system. Its healthy functioning depends upon a well-developed and healthy limbic system and cerebral cortex. Deficits in the limbic system and cerebral cortex can result in chronic and un-tempered alarm.

A comprehensive understanding of attachment will be presented to provide the insights required to make sense of what is happening on the neurobiological level.  Vulnerability theory will be used to explain how the alarm system can be crippled.  The workshop will explain how the severity of defendedness gives rise to three kinds of alarm problems: anxiety-based, agitation-based, and adrenalin-based, with a whole spectrum of manifestations.

Dr. Neufeld will outline six reasons for escalating anxiety in children and adolescents.  In the final part of the day, he will present six surprising, non-medical solutions for reducing anxiety in children and adolescents that can be applied  in working directly with these populations or in working through the parents  The workshop will help those involved in offering services to children and adolescents as well as professionals who want to help clients who are parents to be more effective with their children.
