What Others Are Saying
Reaching for the Top: Report by the Advisor on Healthy Children and Canada's Youth
OTTAWA, Ontario -- March 28, 2008 -- "As mentioned previously, it is difficult for parents to access mental health research and best practices, and specifically, to know what mental health services are available for their children and youth. Mental Health Resource Lists map out the existing landscape of mental health research and services. But unfortunately, there is no consistent approach to these lists in Canada. A good start has been made by Dr. Michael Cheng (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) and Ms. Amy Martin (Crossroads Children’s Centre) through their e-mental health website www.ementalhealth.ca. It is recommended that this Canadian best practice be funded to expand this portal service across Canada."

Ottawa Citizen News Article

OTTAWA, Ontario -- July 17, 2007 -- "A website that lays out the mental health resources available in Ottawa has been so successful it may soon become a model for other cities in the province and possibly beyond." Read the full article here in HTML / External URL
Program Profile in Canadian Psychiatry Aujourd'hui

OTTAWA, Ontario -- April 2007 -- eMentalHealth.ca was profiled as an innovative program by Canadian Psychiatry Aujourd'hui, which is a monthly newsmagazine published by the Canadian Psychiatric Association. "I don’t know about you, but people have always asked me questions about local mental health services—whether it is patients, families, fellow professionals, or someone I’ve just met at a party." Recognized In the Parliament of Canada
OTTAWA, Ontario -- Oct 3, 2006 -- Senator Mobina Jaffer, in a statement to the Senate on Oct 3, 2006, marking the occasion of World Mental Health Day, asks fellow Senators to help promote the eMentalHealth.ca initiative.

"Honourable senators, on October 10, 2006 we will be marking World Mental Health Day for the fifteenth time. On this day, we come together to recognize the importance of mental health in our world, and work to promote awareness of mental health issues.
This year's theme will be "Building Awareness — Reducing Risk: Mental Illness and Suicide." In the spirit of this theme, I want to draw your attention to a truly great initiative that began right here in Ottawa: eMentalHealth.ca..
The site eMentalHealth.ca is an online mental health resource directory where anyone can find out where to get help with mental health questions, problems and concerns in Ottawa. It provides a searchable list of services, as well as an online mental health events calendar where one can find out when mental health-related events such as workshops and programs will occur. This site offers an ideal format for mental health questions. It allows people to get information and connect with resources they need for themselves and their friends, and to confront difficult mental health issues quickly and directly.
Our own Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology pointed out the stigma and denial that often surrounds issues of mental health in its recent report, Out of the Shadows at Last. That is why I believe it is crucial that services such as eMentalHealth.ca be able to exist and flourish.
The website eMentalHealth.ca is an initiative of Crossroads Children's Centre, a non-profit charitable organization serving children with severe behavioural and emotional difficulties. Partnering organizations include the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health at CHEO. It was founded by Amy Martin, a clinician at Crossroads Children's Centre, and Dr. Michael Cheng, a psychiatrist at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. It was developed by John Withnall of Webcanvas.ca, with funding from the City of Ottawa and the Community Foundation of Ottawa. These are individuals who have taken the challenge embodied in World Mental Health Day to heart, and they need help.
Honourable senators, I ask you to consider promoting this system in your own region so that all Canadians can have access to these kinds of resources."
The Honorable Senator Mobina Jaffer, Speech to Senate, Oct 3, 2006

“The Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health at CHEO is proud to lend its support to eMentalHealth.ca. Technology is a tool that can enhance communication and eMentalHealth.ca takes full advantage of this to better inform parents/caregivers, youth, and those supporting young people with mental health concerns about resources in their community. It blends a strong knowledge base with excellent partnerships together with a common sense approach to what people really need in child and youth mental health. It is a model that other communities can learn and benefit from. As an initiative, eMentalHealth.ca has huge potential and we look forward to its launch in the Fall of 2006. The Centre of Excellence applauds the efforts of the partners that have come together to build this important community resource tool.”
Dr. Ian Manion, Executive Director,
The Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health, 2006

“eMentalHealth.ca is a, user-friendly web directory of mental health services that helps the public as well as service providers to navigate the complex, sometimes confusing service system. CMHO encourages communities across the province to consider implementing eMentalHealth.ca.”
Gordon Floyd, Executive Director and CEO,
Children's Mental Health Ontario, 2008
"The Mental Health Patient Service Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) strongly supports the eMentalHealth.ca initiative as well as the partnership that has had the vision and capacity to implement it. Using new and readily available technologies, this initiative provides easy access to excellent information about mental illness and the local community resources which are available to children, youth, parents and caregivers. Such a service will make a significant difference!"
Dr. Simon Davidson, Chief of Psychiatry,
Karen Tataryn, Operations Director, Mental Health Patient Service Unit,
Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, 2006

“I would be pleased to offer a letter of support for your work with the development of ementalhealth.ca in the form of an on-line reference for mental health services for patients of all ages, families as well as health professionals providing care to them… Consumers and family members are coming to us with more information and questions about services and eligibility for certain programs. I would hope a valuable community resource such as ementalhealth hopefully will be bookmarked on every health service provider and family physician’s desktop. We need to get the word out and have providers use this service as a main hub for information with weblinks.”

Champlain Mental Health Network, 2006
