Scoring Key
Add up points for the questions in the following way: • Self-Kindness Items: 2, 6 – Reverse scored (i.e., 1 = 5 pts, 2 = 4 pts, 3 = 3 pts, 4 = 2 pts, 5 = 1 pt) • Self-Judgment Items: 11, 12 - Score normally (1,2,3,4,5) • Common Humanity Items: 5, 10 – Score normally (1,2,3,4,5) • Isolation Items: 4, 8 - Reverse scored (i.e., 1 = 5 pts, 2 = 4 pts, 3 = 3 pts, 4 = 2 pts, 5 = 1 pt) • Mindfulness Items: 3, 7 - Score normally (1,2,3,4,5) • Over-identified Items: 1, 9 – Reverse scored (i.e., 1 = 5 pts, 2 = 4 pts, 3 = 3 pts, 4 = 2 pts, 5 = 1 pt) Any score below 36 suggests that you are less self-compassionate than the average person. In a study of 415 US students, the mean total score was 36 with a standard deviation of 7.33. In other words, about 70% score in the range of 29-43, and 95% score in the range of 21-51.
